Podme
UX and UI design
Podme's customer-centric approach to product development
During my tenure of almost two years, I witnessed and actively participated in the evolution of Podme. As a UX generalist, I wore many hats, utilising a diverse set of skills. From conducting insightful research to planning and executing usability tests, and preparing final handover designs. Every step was aimed at enhancing the user experience.
But perhaps the most fulfilling aspect of my time at Podme was the opportunity to work on numerous design projects. Whether it was crafting intuitive user interfaces, facilitating workshops or collaborating with cross-functional teams on conceptual works, each project allowed me to leverage my creativity and problem-solving skills.

Starting Point
How does one kick off a project, when the only requirements are: getting to know the customers, uncover pain-points, and give suggestions on how the app could be improved? In short, a list of tasks to fill the backlog. We decided to kick off the project with an extensive competitor analysis. During this time we deep dived into some of the most popular podcast applications, to get familiar with the industry standard structures, flows, and solutions, and define definitive do’s and also don’ts.

Then we continued with an also extensive app audit. This gave us a deeper insight into how the app work today. The audit resulted in a substantial report, with a variety of suggestions on areas of improvements.

Meeting the customers
Insight-driven design is crucial for any company that aims to succeed today. We conducted in-depth interviews with our current customers to gain a deeper understanding of how they use Podme and other services. The learnings and insights provided the basis and ensured a continuous customer-driven design processes.
Talking to customers became a regular event in Podme’s product development lifecycle. As the leading UX researcher in the team, I was tasked with recruitment, script writing, interview scheduling, and conducting and then analysing the results.

Brand Update
One of the biggest issue the app was facing is the lack of visual direction and consistent UI components. In the fall of 2022 Podme commissioned a design agency to help reshape their brand identity. This work focused on marketing materials and assets. This was a great opportunity to tackle the component problems, while giving a well needed face lift to the app.

Improving search
In almost every service search feature is crucial. We wanted to help our users to discover more relevant content on our platform. Some of the most difficult issues the Search feature had: Inconsistency in structure, flow and search result quality between iOS and Android platforms Android had no possibility to search for episodes, while we learned from the first round of user interviews that the episode search on iOS was not clear enough for users, therefore wasn’t used Search query started after 3 characters UI inconsistencies.

Creating Library
During the deep interviews that were conducted with current Podme users during the fall of 2022 we discovered that many of our listeners were not using My Podcast page and Feed (later Episode) page on a day to day basis as it was intended to. The participants expressed that their main goal is to reach the latest released episodes as soon as possible after opening the app, and today this flow is interrupted with the Home screen, and the tabs on the Episode page. This project is aiming to learn how we can redesign these pages to give more value to our users.
